Investment Banking activity focuses on proving securities market related services to companies. Primary issue of securities is an important segment of investment banking. Block purchase and sale of securities on behalf companies is another important segment. Mergers and acquisitions fall under this category. Both primary issue as well as block transactions of secondary market sales involve siginficant advisory and consultancy components. Hence advisory and consultancy services are also an important segment of investment banking.
Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley etc. are very well known investment banks. Presently investment banking industry is in turmoil as security investments in mortgage securities have resulted in huge losses and the consequent collapse in the economic system has reduced primary market issues and secondary market transactions.
